Ian is a UKCP registered Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist (Reg no 2011173566). He was awarded an MA in Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (UEL validated) by IATE (The Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education) in August 2017. His earlier post graduate qualifications include a PhD from the University of Nottingham medical school in 1985 and a PGCE, specialising in Early Years education from the Institute of Education, UCL in Aug 2006

At the centre of Ian’s work is the development of a trusting, therapeutic relationship with the child or adolescent, based on empathy, acceptance and curiosity. Children experience a safe base from which to work creatively with image, painting, drawing, clay and sand-tray. Ian’s integrative practice draws upon psychodynamic and attachment theories, object relations, humanistic models and neuroscience. Ian has trained in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy which is important to understand family dynamics and support the team around the child including, parents, carers and other professionals.

Ian’s experience includes but is not limited to, work with children and young people who may be experiencing low mood and anxiety, issues of bereavement, anger, identity, attachment difficulties and family breakdown. He often works with children and young people who have experienced early childhood trauma. Many of these are Looked After Children or adopted. He also works with children and young people who have learning difficulties or are neuro-divergent and may display complex and challenging behaviour. Ian offers individual short or long term psychotherapy.
