Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Gentle, relaxing and rhythmic, MLD is a powerful manual treatment aimed at improving lymphatic drainage. It is a very light massage which can be applied to the whole body or targeted areas as necessary.

What is lymph?

As blood travels around the body, plasma escapes through the capillary walls to become interstitial fluid and supply cells with everything they need, such as oxygen, glucose and protein. This fluid then collects carbon dioxide and lactic acid and other waste products from the cells, and returns them to the bloodstream directly, and indirectly via lymphatic vessels. Interstitial fluid that enters the lymphatic vessels is called lymph, and travels through the lymphatic vessels to enter the blood via veins at the base of the neck. Movement of the lymph relies on muscular contraction, respiration, and exercise, rather than a pump, like the heart for the circulatory system. Lymph is prone to build up if there is an obstruction to its movement, resulting in swelling called lymphoedema, or when the amount of fluid increases as with injuries or illness.

How can MLD help?

Lymphatic vessels are situated just under the skin. Light pressure applied in a rhythmic, flowing motion aids the movement of lymph towards the neck where it joins the bloodstream. Treatment pumps the lymph through the vessels, helping to clear oedema and waste products. It can improve energy, increase circulation and function in the tissues, and the soothing application can decrease sympathetic nervous system activity leading to relaxation.

Conditions that may benefit from MLD include:-

Lymphoedema
Headaches
Skin Disorders
Sinus congestion
Before and after surgery
Before and after flying
Stress
